When my friend casually suggested, “Let’s go to Cuba,” I immediately packed 35 black leotards and began searching for connections in the dance world. A swift inquiry led me to a friend who knew someone from Cuba who had a relative at a Cuban ballet school, and soon enough, I had the thrilling opportunity to observe classes at the prestigious National Ballet School of Cuba in Havana!
A highlight of my visit was watching the classes and then distributing the donated leotards* to the upper-level girls. Seeing their faces light up with excitement and gratitude as they received their new dancewear was an unforgettable moment. Although I required a translator, the dancers all smiled as I recounted memories of a strict and demanding Cuban ballet teacher I had in my youth. The teachers and administrators were so welcoming and invited me to return for their annual International Meeting of Academies for the Teaching of Ballet in March.
As my first visit to Cuba drew to a close, I found myself enriched by new friendships with teachers, students, parents, and administrators at the school. This in-person experience not only deepened my appreciation for Cuban ballet but also reinforced the power of cross-cultural connections and support in the arts community. My spontaneous adventure blossomed into a meaningful exchange, leaving a lasting impact on the students at the National Ballet School of Cuba with my promise to return with more supplies!
If you are interested in helping provide pointe shoes/other dancewear for these hardworking, dedicated students, please make a donation to Trifecta Arts and we will ensure the dancers receive the full benefit of your contribution!
